6FDA is a solid with a melting point in the range of 243-247 °C. Hexafluoro substitution makes it a unique dianhydride, producing polyimides with superior heat resistance and electrical performance, prime requirements for advanced FCCL circuitry in 5G-enabled smartphones and related personal electronic devices. In addition, 6FDA allows to produce colorless and transparent polyimide films in contrast to mainstream, yellow-brown polyimides. This has facilitated the emergence of polyimide film-based foldable displays as a glass substitute.
Advanced aerospace composite applications also use 6FDA, for example in AFR-PE4, a matrix resin developed by the US Air Force Research Laboratory. AFR-PE4 attains a glass transition of 360°C, while eliminating the use of methylene dianiline (MDA) and its associated health concerns. During composite fabrication, AFR-PE4 facilitates more efficient infusion processes versus the labor-intensive prepreg process associated with predecessor grades such as PMR-15.
